AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Many residents of Folkestone, Hythe, and Romney Marsh are deeply affected by the national housing crisis. High mortgages and rents have made renting increasingly insecure and homeownership a distant dream. I am fighting for secure and affordable housing for all local residents, no matter how long it takes.
Taking Action nationally:
- I proudly voted for the Renters’ Rights Bill at its first and second readings and will continue to support it until it becomes law. This groundbreaking legislation will:
- Tackle homelessness.
- Ban harmful ‘section-21’ no-fault evictions.
- Provide greater security for renters.
- I am actively addressing the housing crisis through intensive engagement with local stakeholders and participation in national legislation.
Supporting Local Residents:
- I hosted a special surgery to assist residents of Pensand House in Hythe, who have been served no-fault eviction notices and are understandably anxious about their future. I remain committed to supporting them through this difficult time.
- I am also helping leaseholders fight unfair charges and treatment by freeholders and managing agents.
Promoting Sustainable Housing Development:
- During my visit to the Roddy Homes development in Hythe, I saw their innovative use of brownfield land and sustainable building practices—an excellent example of how housing should be developed responsibly while protecting the environment.
- At the Martello Lakes development, I discussed ways to improve social mobility for construction workers, recognizing that a strong workforce is essential for delivering high-quality homes more efficiently.
Honouring Military Families:
- I warmly welcomed the Government’s decision to repurchase 251 military homes in this constituency, reversing the damage caused by failed Conservative privatization policies that left military families struggling.
Funding to Combat Homelessness:
- I am delighted that the Government has allocated £980,276 to Folkestone and Hythe District Council to prevent and reduce homelessness in our local area.
I will continue advocating for bold, practical solutions to expand access to affordable housing while safeguarding our environment, ensuring every resident has a safe and secure place to call home.
