CLEAN UP OUR BEACHES
I have long been campaigning actively against water pollution both locally and nationally. The District has long faced a severe and increasing problem with bathing water quality, impacting local residents, wildlife, and the economy. Locally, I have engaged intensively with stakeholders, and nationally, I have supported legislative measures to address systemic issues.
Labour Government’s Immediate Actions on Water Infrastructure:
- Secured ringfenced investment for water infrastructure upgrades within a week of taking office.
- Introduced new rules prioritizing environmental protection and consumer interests over profit-making.
- Doubled customer compensation for breaches of key standards.
Water (Special Measures) Bill:
- I voted for the Bill at every stage and will continue to support it until it becomes law.
- Key provisions include:
- Blocking bonuses for executives overseeing polluted waterways.
- Introducing criminal charges for persistent law-breaking by water companies.
- Imposing automatic fines for violations and ensuring monitoring of all UK sewage outlets.
Improving Bathing Water Regulations:
- In November, the Government launched a consultation on updating Bathing Water Regulations (2013).
- My response to that consultation advocated for improved public health outcomes and environmental protections tailored to local needs.
My ongoing work with stakeholders:
- I meet with key stakeholders, including the Water Minister, Southern Water, the Environment Agency, Folkestone & Hythe District Council, local campaigners, and Surfers Against Sewage.
- I attend technical stakeholder meetings with Southern Water, the District Council, Environment to identify and address local sources of pollution.
- Conducted site visits to the Range Road pumping station and wastewater treatment works in Hythe to understand our water infrastructure.
Independent Water Commission:
- The Government established the Commission in October 2024 to investigate and recommend systemic changes to the regulation of the water sector.
- Focus areas include affordable water bills, increased investment in infrastructure, and reducing shareholder payouts.
Looking ahead, I remain committed to working with the Government and local stakeholders to enhance bathing water regulations and protect our rivers and beaches for recreation, mental well-being, and economic vitality.
